In memoriam



Fr. Manuel Rodrigues, retired diocesan priest, died Feb. 20 at Sacré-Coeur Hospital, where he had been admitted Jan. 19 for heart problems; he suffered a series of strokes. He was 80 years old.

Of Goan descent, Fr. Rodrigues was ordained Feb. 2, 1971, at St. Edmund of Canterbury Parish. He initially served as a curate for six years in St. Edmund's, St. Thomas More and Our Lady of Fatima parishes respectively. In 1978, he was appointed a pastoral animator with the Montreal Catholic School Commission, serving atD'Arcy McGee, Holy Names and Lester B. Pearson high schools.

He retired in 1995 as an animator but continued to serve until 2003 at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Little Burgundy, where he had been parochial administrator since 1990.

Despite his limited mobility, he continued to celebrate mass every Friday at 11 a.m. at his residence of Les Verrières du Golf up to the point of his hospitalization.

Bishop Thomas Dowd celebrated his funeral Feb. 26 at St-Laurent church; he is buried in the crypt of Mary Queen of the World Cathedral.

He is survived by two brothers and one sister.
