Pendant longtemps, le mois de mai et le mois de juin ont été le temps privilégié de l’année où les ordinations presbytérales étaient célébrées. Elles marquaient de façon particulière la fin de l’année scolaire au Grand Séminaire. Les temps ont changé. Maintenant le moment des ordinations sacerdotales ne se limite pas à ces deux mois. Mais la fin de mai demeure, pour une majorité des prêtres, le temps où il célèbre leur anniversaire d’ordination.

À tous ces prêtres, j’offre mes meilleurs vœux. Avec eux, je veux rendre grâce pour toutes ces années données au service du Seigneur. Ils ont aidé bien des hommes et des femmes à rencontrer le Christ Jésus et à découvrir comment leur vie pouvait prendre un sens nouveau en vivant son Évangile. Je leur redis toute ma gratitude pour tout ce qu’ils ont fait pour l’Église qui est à Montréal.

Je veux aussi offrir mes meilleurs vœux à tous les diacres dont c’est l’anniversaire d’ordination, cette année, ainsi qu’à toutes les personnes de vie consacrée qui célèbrent un anniversaire de profession religieuse. Je les assure de ma reconnaissance pour leur importante contribution à la vie de notre Église.

En raison du nombre, je ne peux être présent à toutes ces célébrations d’anniversaire. Mais j’aime souligner, de façon communautaire, l’anniversaire des prêtres séculiers et religieux, engagées au service du diocèse, qui célèbrent un 60e, un 50e ou encore un 25e anniversaire d’ordination. Ces années marquent des étapes importantes dans une vie. Je les invite à ma table à la résidence de l’Archevêché. Je peux ainsi, au nom de l’Église de Montréal, leur témoigner toute la reconnaissance qu’ils méritent pour leur dévouement au cours de leurs longues années de service.

Cet événement annuel aura lieu demain soir, le jeudi 29 mai 2008. Voici la liste des confrères à qui je souhaite bon anniversaire :

For a long time, the months of May and June were that special time of year when priestly ordinations were normally celebrated. It was the end of the school year at the Grand Séminaire. Times have changed. Priestly ordinations are not longer restricted to these two months. Nevertheless, the end of May still remains, for a majority of priests, the time of year to celebrate their anniversary of ordination.

I want to extend to all these priests my best wishes. Together, with them, I offer thanks for all the years given in service to the Lord. They have helped countless men and women to find Jesus Christ and to discover new meaning in their lives by following the Gospel. I want to express my gratitude to all of them for what they have offered the Church in Montreal.

I also want to congratulate all the deacons who are celebrating an ordination anniversary and all those consecrated men and women marking an anniversary of religious profession. To them, I express my appreciation for their significant contribution to the life of our Church.

Because of the number of anniversaries, I cannot attend all of them. I would like, however, to acknowledge communally the anniversaries of those diocesan and religious priests who have worked for the archdiocese and are celebrating 60, 50 and 25 years of priestly life. These are milestone moments in life. I invite them to share a meal with me at the Cathedral Residence. There, on behalf of the archdiocese, I can extend to them the recognition they well deserve for their long years of faithful service.

This year, this annual event will take place tomorrow night, Thursday, May 29, 2008. Here is the list of the priests to whom I extend my congratulations:

Fête patronale

Le mois de mai se termine pour nous avec la célébration de la fête patronale. Cette célébration est l’occasion privilégiée pour les diocésains de signifier leur appartenance à l’Église qui est à Montréal. Elle nous permet raffermir les liens qui nous rattachent à notre Église. Elle nous fournit aussi l’occasion de souligner publiquement l’engagement et la contribution de personnes qui se sont mises au service du diocèse pendant de nombreuses années, et de leur rendre hommage en leur décernant le Mérite diocésain.

De plus, j’accueillerai les 180 jeunes de Montréal qui participeront à la JMJ 2008 à Sydney ainsi que leur famille. Au nom de notre Église, je les enverrai à cet événement et leur donnerai ma bénédiction pour que cette expérience porte des fruits abondants pour notre diocèse.

À nouveau, notre célébration nous rassemblera le samedi 31 mai, à la Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde à 19h30.

Je vous attends nombreux pour exprimer ensemble notre unité.

Diocesan Celebration

For our diocesan Church, the month of May ends with our feast-day celebration. This offers a unique occasion for the faithful of the diocese to demonstrate their sense of belonging. It allows us to strengthen the bonds that unite us in the Church. It also offers us the occasion to recognize publicly the commitment and the important contribution of people who have served the diocesan Church for a number of years and to honor them with the presentation of the Diocesan Award of Merit.

Furthermore, I will welcome the 180 Montreal youth who will take part in the 2008 World Youth Days in Sydney, and their family members. On behalf of our Church I will officially mandate them to this event and will give them my apostolic blessing so that this experience may abundantly bear fruits in our Diocese.

I remind you that this diocesan celebration will take place Saturday, May 31, at 7:30 p.m., at Mary Queen of the World Cathedral.

I hope to see you there as a concrete expression of our diocesan unity.
