Pour ma part, en réponse à la demande du Cardinal Marc Ouellet, j’ai accepté de donner une conférence ayant pour titre : L’Eucharistie aux origines de l’Église au Canada, lundi le 16 juin à l’église de Saint-Rédempteur. Je dois avouer que, depuis très longtemps, je m’intéresse à la vie des personnes qui ont marqué l’histoire de notre nation et particulièrement de notre Église. J’ai à leur endroit une grande admiration et même une vénération, notamment envers les missionnaires, qui ont apporté ici la foi et bâti une Église qui est toujours bien vivante, quoiqu’on en dise en certains milieux.

Le sujet de cette conférence m’a obligé à me documenter auprès de spécialistes qui ont étudié cette époque. Je ne prétends pas faire œuvre d’historien mais œuvre de vulgarisation pour éclairer ces années que l’on connaît fort peu. J’espère que les personnes présentes à la conférence ont eu autant de plaisir à découvrir l’action de premiers missionnaires en Nouvelle France que j’en ai eu à la leur présenter.

Demain jeudi, la célébration du sacrement du Pardon aura une couleur bien montréalaise. En effet, deux prêtres de Montréal ont assumé l’orientation de la liturgie; : l’abbé Alain Roy, directeur du Service de pastorale liturgique et l’abbé Robert J. Gendreau, curé et metteur en scène du merveilleux chemin de Croix de la JMJ 2002 de Toronto. L’abbé Gendreau a écrit le texte de la partie dramatique et est le metteur en scène de l’ensemble de la célébration. Cette liturgie dramatisée de la Parole est intitulé : La table de la réconciliation.

À partir des textes sacrés tirés de la Genèse, des Psaumes et de l’Évangile qui présentent tour à tour le meurtre d’Abel commis par son frère, la demande de pardon imploré à travers le psaume 50 et le début de la parabole de l’enfant prodigue, un texte a été composé et sera défendu par quelque acteurs. Cette liturgie dramatisée précédera l’homélie donnée par le Cardinal Claudio Hummes o.f.m., et visera à susciter une meilleure compréhension du sacrement du pardon. Elle préparera à la célébration individuelle avec un prêtre.

Le but de la célébration du pardon à l’intérieur de ce congrès eucharistique international, est de souligner le lien très fort qui existe entre le sacrement de la confession et celui de l’Eucharistie. Et aussi de faire comprendre davantage la profondeur de la miséricorde divine qui est offerte à tous les êtres humains, sans exception.

La compétence et l’expérience des abbés Roy et Gendreau permettent de croire que cette célébration ne passera pas inaperçue et qu’elle fera mieux saisir l’importance de vivre cette rencontre avec le Seigneur dans le sacrement du pardon.

As you read this, the International Eucharistic Congress will be well underway in Québec City. We will have reached the halfway point. You can follow most of it, thanks to the coverage on television and radio, in the newspapers and on websites.

Answering the invitation extended to me by Cardinal Marc Ouellet, I have accepted to give a talk on the theme “The Eucharist at the Source of the Church in Canada” on Monday, June 16, in Saint-Rédempteur church. I must admit that I’ve had an abiding interest in reading the biographies of those who have marked our nation’s history, particularly our Church history. I have a great deal of admiration and even, dare I say, veneration for them, especially for the missionaries who brought the faith here and built a Church that remains vigorous today, despite what some reports say.

To prepare for this session, I consulted with specialists who have studied that historical period. I didn’t attempt to offer an historical treatise but rather a popular account of that period, which is largely unknown today. I hope that those who attended the session derived as much pleasure in discovering the work of the first missionaries in New France as I had in presenting it to them.

Tomorrow morning, Thursday, the celebration of the sacrament of Reconciliation (confessions) will take place with a unique Montreal touch. Two Montreal priests have prepared this liturgy: Fr. Alain Roy, Director of the Pastoral Liturgy Service, and Fr. Robert J. Gendreau, a pastor and the director of the magnificent Way of the Cross performed for the 2002 World Youth Days in Toronto. Fr. Gendreau has written the script for the theatrical portion of the liturgy and will be the overall director of the celebration. This theatrical Liturgy of the Word is called: « La table de la reconciliation » At the Reconciliation Table.

Inspired by texts from Genesis, the Psalms and the Gospels — which recount the murder of Abel by his brother, the quest for forgiveness found in Psalm 50, and the beginning of the parable of the Prodigal Son — several actors will present a short theatrical piece. This liturgical dramatization will precede the homily, delivered by Cardinal Claudio Hummes, o.f.m., and will help to impart a better understanding of the sacrament of Reconciliation. This will then be followed by individual confession with a priest for those wishing to do so.

The idea of offering confession as part of the International Eucharistic Congress is to emphasize the strong link that exists between the sacrament of Reconciliation and the sacrament of the Eucharist. Also, it becomes easier to understand the depth of God’s mercy, which is offered to all human beings without exception.

The talent and experience of Fathers Roy and Gendreau leads one to believe that this celebration will be memorable and will succeed in highlighting the importance of experiencing this personal encounter with the Lord through the sacrament of Reconciliation.
