MISSION:
The mission entrusted by the Archbishop of Montreal to the diocesan Social Action Office is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in today's culture, to inform the baptized about the social dimension of the faith, and to mobilize the People of God around the following demands which are derived from the Good News:
- Respect for the dignity of each human being;
- The call to justice, compassion, reconciliation and peace;
- Commitment to solidarity, with an option for the poor;
- Participation in social development initiatives to promote the integral liberation of persons and to foster the humanization of social structures and relations.

SPECIFIC TASKS:

1. Promote parish and borough-based social action, in order to generate greater solidarity between local Christian communities and various citizens' groups fighting against poverty and exclusion, to raise people's awareness about social, economic, cultural and political issues, and to foster greater participation in the development of their neighbourhoods;

2. Collaborate with social action ministers in other dioceses and also with the Assembly of the Bishops of Québec and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops;

3. Initiate and participate in efforts to defend and improve human and collective rights, especially those of persons living in poverty;

4. Develop partnerships with organizations, coalitions and movements committed to defending social programs and democratic values;

5. Assist in welcoming refugees and immigrants as well as in building bridges between different cultural and linguistic communities;

6. Participate in the social re-integration of ex-inmates, in the spirit of restorative justice;

7. Raise awareness about the realities experienced by people living in the countries of the South, about the deterioration of the environment and its consequences, about the role of governments, financial institutions, and non-governmental organizations, in the context of globalization;

8. Provide information to the media and to the public about social action ministry and about various charitable works;

9. Collaborate with other diocesan services as well as with centres of formation.
