Missionary Month 2021: Charity and Solidarity
General
As we approach October 1st, beginning of Missionary Month and Feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Patroness of Missions, Canadian Catholics – and all men and women of good will – are invited to (re)discover, to celebrate and to support missionary activity throughout the world in favor of those who are most in need.
From Mission Foi
The very essence of Christian identity is to bear witness to the Risen Christ and His love for humanity: this is at the heart of Pope Francis' Message for the 97th World Mission Day, whose theme is: "We cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4, 20).
In preparation for Missionary Month, Mission foi (the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith) has prepared its 2021 Missionary Animation Kit (in French and English versions) in which many resources are offered, especially to support animation in parishes and different groups. Also available, online, is a video produced by the Pontifical Mission Society’s global network, giving voice to 50 missionaries from 50 countries.
Missionary Commitment and Charity
Missionary Month reaches its peak on Sunday, October 24th, when we will once again be invited to support the ongoing projects in many of the Church’s 1100 poorest dioceses in the world that still depend on the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. According to Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation, the pandemic has awakened our missionary participation in our respective environments and this "translates into acts of missionary charity and solidarity for the poor and suffering.”
This year’s World Mission Day collection, in Canada and elsewhere, will once again be compromised by the pandemic. However, Canadians have been very generous. Last year, more than $3 230 842 were distributed through Mission foi, in order for the Gospel to continue to be proclaimed and lived in the hearts of many people around the world. In these times of global crisis, this gesture is a significant financial assistance most welcomed by many populations in mission territories.
Mission foi appeals to the generosity of all Canadians to support the numerous projects underway in the world, as well as to their prayers for all missionaries serving and bringing the Good News to the peripheries.
