Message from Archbishop Christian Lépine on the death of Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo

Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa

Your Eminence,

Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo has died. I wish to express my deepest condolences to you and to the People of God of Kinshasa, whom he served as Archbishop for many years. He was with us in the Archdiocese of Montreal during the inauguration of the Notre-Dame-d'Afrique Mission in 2013.

The inauguration of that Mission was at the time - and remains today - an achievement of major importance in the life of our diocese. During the ensuing years, I met him several times in Rome, where he was one of the eight Cardinals advising Pope Francis. I always admired the dignity and the accessibility to others that distinguished him. I am grateful to God for the service he provided to the Church in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is also the country of origin of many of our fellow members in the diocese of Montreal.

I unite my prayers with those of all who knew him, as together we entrust him to God and to his eternal Love.

+ Christian Lépine

Archbishop of Montreal
