Development and Peace – Caritas Canada is raising funds to help support rescue and relief efforts in Morocco. 

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck late Friday evening. On Monday, the death toll had exceeded 2,500 with the same number of wounded. Due to their remote and mountainous location, the affected areas are extremely difficult to access, which also hinders adequate reporting. Nonetheless, all indications are that damage is extensive, and the death toll is expected to continue to climb. 

Caritas Morocco has already sent some teams into the worst affected areas. Other Caritas agencies in the region are in close contact with them and are at the ready to lend their support. 

We know from experience that Caritas Morocco and other local partners will require all the help we can provide, in order first and foremost to carry out lifesaving missions, secondly to offer comfort and support to survivors and, finally, to assist communities in the process of rebuilding with a view to sustainability.
