Following the Holy See's announcement of the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, April 21, Archbishop Christian Lépine invites the faithful to unite in both thanksgiving and sorrow. He reflects on a legacy grounded in encounter and calls us to continue the Pope’s mission of affirming human dignity, fostering peace, and walking together in hope.

ARCHBISHOP’S TRIBUTE TO POPE FRANCIS:

A Legacy of Compassion, Humility, and Unity

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is with deep sorrow that we received the news of the passing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. In this time of mourning, we join together in prayer to honour a man whose life was dedicated to serving the most vulnerable and promoting a Church that is open and welcoming to all.

Pope Francis profoundly marked our era through his unwavering commitment to the Gospel values of compassion, humility, and social justice. His constant call to care for the poor and his passionate advocacy for the environment deeply resonated with us, as these concerns remain central to our own mission.

His pontificate was distinguished by a sincere desire for unity among peoples and religions. Pope Francis extended a hand to the Indigenous communities of Canada, acknowledging their past sufferings while working toward genuine reconciliation. His historic visit to our land will remain etched in our memory as a powerful moment of mutual listening and renewed hope.

As we grieve his loss, let us remember his teachings, which will continue to inspire our shared spiritual journey. May his example guide each of us toward a living faith expressed through concrete actions in service of the common good.

In this difficult time, let us pray together that God may welcome His faithful servant into eternal peace. May the legacy of Pope Francis endure among us, as we carry forward his mission with courage and conviction.

Amen.
