From March 10 to 13, the Catholic bishops of Quebec will gather in Montmagny for their 337th plenary assembly. The meeting coincides with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatière, which stretches between the St. Lawrence River and the forests of the Appalachians.

Shaped by its rural heritage and maritime roots, the diocese is also marked by innovation, industry, and tourism. Over the decades, it has been the birthplace of many religious vocations.

“It is an honour to welcome my brother bishops to this beautiful diocese and to show them its splendours,” says Bishop Pierre Goudreault of Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatière. “In this inspiring natural setting, I hope to introduce them to the creative spirit that emerges here—seen especially in the many artists and artisans who have left their mark on this community.”

Diocesan faithful are invited to take part in the celebrations at a Eucharistic liturgy on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m., at Sainte-Anne Cathedral in La Pocatière.

During their working sessions, the bishops will address several matters, including preparations for the Grande Assemblée missionnaire (GAM), to be held this September. The gathering will bring together more than 200 participants from dioceses across Quebec. Those engaged in the Church’s mission will exchange perspectives and reflect on how to proclaim the Gospel in today’s world and in the years ahead.

“The Church is always in motion,” explains Bishop Martin Laliberté, President of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Quebec and Bishop Coadjutor–elect of Saint-Jean–Longueuil, as well as Administrator of the Diocese of Trois-Rivières. “For us as bishops, it is important to come together regularly to assess and take stock. Whether among ourselves, with our Church partners, or with society at large, these conversations help us remain attentive and at the service of the people of Quebec.”
