The 337th plenary assembly of Quebec’s Catholic bishops begins today in Montmagny. Taking place alongside the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Diocese of Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatière, the bishops will work together through March 13.

Over the course of the week, the bishops will address a range of topics, including preparations for the Grande Assemblée Missionnaire (GAM) scheduled for September. This gathering will bring together more than 200 participants from dioceses across Quebec, providing an opportunity for representatives who serve in Church ministry to share their vision and reflect on how best to proclaim the Gospel today and into the future.

The management of the Church’s real estate assets remains a central concern, alongside support for theological and pastoral formation throughout Quebec. In the spirit of ecumenical collaboration, the bishops will also welcome Anglican bishops from Quebec and Montreal to discuss matters of shared concern.

“Gathering as bishops allows us to exchange ideas and gain a clearer understanding of the realities in our diverse communities, whether rural or urban. It enables us to combine our strengths, share resources, and act in a coordinated way to respond to the needs of the faithful and society at large,” said Bishop Martin Laliberté, president of the Assembly, elected coadjutor bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil, and administrator of the Diocese of Trois-Rivières.

The faithful are invited to join the bishops for a celebration on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Sainte-Anne Cathedral in La Pocatière. The liturgy will be presided over by Bishop Pierre Goudreault of the Diocese of Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatière.

The bishops meet twice each year, in March and September, to discuss the realities and challenges facing the Catholic Church in Quebec. These assemblies help foster collaboration, shared guidance, and a spirit of fellowship among bishops across the province.
