Seasonal workers tending local agricultural land this season were welcomed at Saint-Théophile Church on Aug. 30 for a gathering steeped in faith, fellowship and gratitude.

Bishop Martin Laliberté of Saint-Jean–Longueuil celebrated the Mass, with members of Montreal's Spanish-speaking Catholic community in attendance. Father Pierangelo Paternieri, c.s., episcopal vicar and director of the diocesan Office for Cultural and Ritual Communities, opened with a welcome on behalf of Archbishop Christian Lépine of Montreal.

He reminded the workers that they are welcomed not only for the work they do here each season, but first and foremost as brothers and sisters in Christ, and full members of the Church of Montreal.

He went on to draw attention to the pastoral care offered to them throughout their time in Quebec. Spanish-speaking priests and local Catholic communities hope to offer them friendship and spiritual support, particularly as many are far from family, loved ones and homeland.

The gathering also honoured the sacrifices of the workers who come each year to support Quebec agriculture. Their labour, courage and generosity are a gift to the communities that host them.

Beyond the fields, their presence helps weave ties between peoples and cultures. Through their traditions, their experience and their faith, they enrich our community life and bear witness to a solidarity that crosses borders.

Above all, the gathering at Saint-Théophile was meant as a sign that the Church stands beside these workers, and a reminder that in the Catholic communities around them, they can count on a place to pray, gather, find support and feel at home.

The celebration ended in thanksgiving and prayer, as the assembly entrusted to the Lord the workers, their daily labour and the families awaiting them at home.

To all the agricultural workers in our midst, the welcome stands: the Church of Montreal is their Church too.
