2017 is the 50th anniversary of Development and Peace, the Canadian Catholic organization for international solidarity.

The Council on Church and Society of the Assembly of Québec Catholic Bishops, wishes to highlight the accomplishments of this organization, which is a member of Caritas internationalis, an international Catholic organization devoted to aid, development, and social services.

Caritas is present in 200 countries and territories and works on behalf of the poor and oppressed; it constitutes one of the largest networks in the world among non-governmental organizations.

Development and Peace was founded in 1967 by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in response to Pope Paul VI's declaration, in his encyclical Populorum Progressio, that "development [is] the new name for peace" (para. 76).
