Montreal
In this jubilee year 2025, we are invited to be pilgrims of hope, following the example of biblical teachings. Inspired by the passage in Deuteronomy, “At the end of seven years, you shall forgive debts” (Dt 15:1), the Archdiocese of Montreal is joining the worldwide Transforming Debt into Hope campaign, spearheaded by Development and Peace - Caritas Canada.
An Invitation to Justice
This campaign highlights the devastating effects of insurmountable debt, particularly for our sisters and brothers in the Global South. It also highlights the ecological debt, the result of the exploitation of natural resources by the countries of the North, leading to environmental degradation and social injustice.
Pope Francis, in his bull Spes non confudit, calls us to act:
“Forgiving the debts of countries that can never repay them is more a question of justice than magnanimity.” (§16)
How can we get involved?
In this Lenten season, we invite you to :
- Give generously to Share Lent, especially on Solidarity Sunday, April 6, 2025.
- Sign the global petition calling for the cancellation of unjust debts, reform of the global financial system and an integral framework for debt management.
Together, through our gifts, prayers and commitment, we can bring Christ's justice and compassion to those who need it most.
