Montreal

At this moment in our history, when we are increasingly dismayed by the spread of wars and the countless losses of innocent lives, each and every one of us wants to do something to put an end to this violence.

But what can we do? Beyond our personal commitment to establishing peace around us, and our participation in solidarity actions for affected populations, as believers, we know we possess a powerful tool: prayer.

That's why, on October 12, the Upper Basilica of Saint Joseph's Oratory welcomed hundreds of faithful from the Middle East, of different traditions, for a solemn Eucharistic celebration in favour of peace.

The Mass, presided over by Archbishop Christian Lépine of Montreal, was concelebrated by :

  • His Excellency Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič, Apostolic Nuncio to Canada
  • The Most Rev. Paul-Marwan Tabet, Eparchial Bishop for Catholic Maronites in Canada
  • The Most Rev. Milad El Jawich, B.S., Eparchial Bishop of the Catholic Greek-Melkites of Canada
  • The Most Rev. Antoine Nassif, Apostolic Exarch for Syro-Catholics in Canada,
  • Bishop Antoine Nabil Andari, Bishop of the Maronite Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch and Auxiliary Bishop to Jounieh, Lebanon.

Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the City of Montreal were also present.

It was moving to take part in this event, which brought together faithful from various Christian traditions, gathered as brothers around their pastors. All were united in the suffering caused by the current war, yet carried by the faith that it is still possible to pray and believe in peace.

A visible testimony of brotherhood and faith, which, like a small flame, illuminates the darkness brought on by hatred and violence. Each of us is now invited to continue along this path, keeping alive the hope that peace is possible.
