Pope Leo

Each year, Missionary Month gives the Church an opportunity to remind us that missionary commitment belongs to all the baptized, and to draw attention to the initiatives that help people come to know the Gospel and live it.

It is also a time to pray, to reflect on our own missionary calling and to support the men and women throughout the world who devote themselves to serving the Gospel.

A mission for every one of us

Being a missionary means more than setting out for distant lands. Through our witness, our prayer, our service to others and our support for the many evangelization initiatives, each of us can take part in the Church’s mission.

So throughout October, we are invited to rediscover how, right where we are, we can bear witness to the love and hope of Christ.

World Mission Sunday

At the heart of Missionary Month is World Mission Sunday, held each year on the second-to-last Sunday of October.

Instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and entrusted to the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the day is a special time of prayer and of solidarity with the many missionary initiatives the Church supports around the world.

The collection taken up that day helps fund evangelization projects and a range of mission work in many countries.

Let us pray for the mission

Throughout the month, we are called to hold the Church’s mission in prayer.

May this prayer help us keep close to our hearts all who proclaim the Gospel, and everyone across the globe who seeks to bear witness to their faith and serve their communities.
