Christians in the Middle East: Condemned to Die Out?
General
On May 9, 2018, the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia University will host Mr. Mario Bard from Aid to the Church in Need to discuss their work in support of the Christian populations in the Middle East.
Despite continuous calls for reconciliation and peace in the Middle East, various Christian communities have dwindled significantly over the past decades. Whether by genocide, war or systemic persecution, communities like the Chaldeans, the Assyrians and the Melkites have shrunk to a fraction of what they had been in recent times. As more and more members of these communities seek asylum and stability in other parts of the world, international efforts to protect them in their historical lands have become dire.
What is our responsibility as Canadians to protect these endangered groups? What can be done to stem the emptying of the Middle East of its ancient ethnic and religious communities?
