Archdiocese of Montreal Partners with Pointe-Claire Heritage Society to Restore Historic Windmill

Montreal
Montreal, February 27, 2025 – The Archdiocese of Montreal has signed a 50-year lease agreement with the Pointe-Claire Heritage Preservation Society (SSPPC), securing the long-term restoration and preservation of the historic Pointe-Claire Windmill. Under this agreement, the SSPPC will oversee restoration efforts and transform the site into a cultural and educational hub, offering guided tours and programming that highlight its historical significance.
A Rare Landmark with Over 300 Years of History
Built in 1710 by the Sulpician priests, the Pointe-Claire Windmill is one of the oldest surviving windmills in North America. Recognized as a symbol of the community since 1911, the windmill became the property of the Archdiocese of Montreal in 2020 following the departure of the religious congregation that had occupied the adjacent convent. Both the windmill and its surrounding grounds have been designated heritage sites, in 1983 and 2013 respectively.
For centuries, the windmill has stood as a testament to the ingenuity of early settlers and the critical role of milling in the development of New France. This restoration project ensures that it will continue to inspire future generations.
Restoration Made Possible by Community Support
The restoration initiative is being funded through private donations, with the first phase slated to begin this year thanks to a significant contribution from the family of Claude Lesage, former president of Giant Inc. and a civil engineer. Lesage will also chair a committee overseeing fundraising and restoration efforts. Additional fundraising campaigns will be launched to support the next phases of the project.
Quotes
"The Archdiocese is pleased to collaborate with a local organization to preserve the Windmill and ensure its continued legacy. Above all, this new partnership will allow the people of Pointe-Claire to be at the heart of the project."
— Stefano Marrone, Head of Real Estate, Archdiocese of Montreal
“This partnership is a significant step forward for the Windmill, which is both the emblem of our city and a unique heritage landmark. We are honored to be entrusted with this important mission and wish to acknowledge the collaboration of all those involved, including the Mayor of Pointe-Claire. While the first phase of the project is secured, we invite the community to take part in this initiative by making tax-deductible donations to the Pointe-Claire Heritage Preservation Society (https://patrimoinepointeclaire.org/get-involved/donations/?lang=en) to help fund the next phases of work. Together, we will bring more than 300 years of the Windmill’s history back to life for current and future generations."
