On the occasion of the Feast of St. Padre Pio (1887 – 1968) on September 23, the anniversary of his death, it is inspiring to recall some of the important features of his life.

Padre Pio (baptized Francesco Forgione) is revered in the Catholic Church, which celebrates his unshakeable faith and honours his profound humility and deep piety. His life and legacy are a source of inspiration and wisdom for those who are undertaking the spiritual journey. This essay will explore some of the central aspects of the life and spirituality of Padre Pio, with particular emphasis on his remarkable confessions, the sacred nature of the priesthood, his struggle with clericalism, the rejection that he endured, his deep humility and his canonization by Pope John Paul II.

He heard untold hours of confessions, often spending more than ten hours of the day in the confessional booth.
